Wrestling: L-C defeats Coleman

The Luxemburg-Casco varsity wrestling team defeated No. 1 ranked Coleman 31-24 in a packed gym Tuesday night.  The Spartans remain undefeated with a 9-0 record in dual meets.

Coleman's Donovan Salewski defeated the Spartan's Phil Rasmussen in the heavyweight match, but Luxemburg-Casco won the meet.

It was another win for the team under new head coach Chas Treml.   The Division II second-ranked Spartans overcame the top-ranked Division III Cougars in the back and forth dual meet.

After starting the dual at 160 pounds with a tough loss, the next two Spartans – Dalton Smerchek at 170 pounds and Cullen Ducat at 182 pounds – pinned their opponents to earn Luxemburg-Casco a 12-3 lead.

Then Coleman won five straight matches to take an 18-12 lead.

Cameron Lemmens at 120 pounds broke the streak with a 2-1 decision for Luxemburg-Casco.

In the final match with the Spartans leading 25-24, 152-pound Eric Peters pinned Coleman's Blake Forner to finish off Coleman.

Kewaunee Invitational

Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah placed first in the Kewaunee Invitational meet on Dec. 19 with 190.5 team points, followed by Gillett-Suring with 179, Seymour 155 and Brillion 142.5. Host Kewaunee placed fifth with 142 points.

The Storm's Cam Konop placed first and scored 30 team points at 113. In the first-place match, he pinned Carson Kraus of Lourdes Academy at 3:43.

Jesse Steinhorst (142) placed third and scored 19 team points.  He lost in the championship bracket in overtime 13-11 to Devin Thoreson of Brillion. Sam Severin wrestled to a second-place finish at 170, earning 18 team points.
