Algoma receives Fund for Lake Michigan grant

Algoma has received a $75,000 grant from the Fund for Lake Michigan to improve water quality and reduce the number of beach closures at Crescent Beach.  The two-mile-long beach is a popular destination for residents and visitors and is important to the local economy.

In a press release, the Fund noted that water quality at Crescent Beach is poor and the beach is on the state’s impaired list due to high levels of bacteria and outbreaks of cladophora.

The mission of the Fund for Lake Michigan is to support efforts, and in particularly those in southeastern Wisconsin, that enhance the health of Lake Michigan and its shoreline and tributary river systems for the benefit of the communities that depend upon the system for water, recreation and commerce.  Since 2011, the Fund has awarded 158 grants totaling over $11.3 million to non-profit organizations and local governments.

Scholarships available for local students

The Greater Green Bay Foundation is offering scholarships ranging from $500 to $40,000 for local students with an application deadline of March 15.

With some awards serving students with an interest in math, music, education, basketball or bowling and others offering broader opportunities to help with the cost of a two- and four-year program, there are options for all students from Northeastern Wisconsin pursuing higher education.

The Greater Green Bay Foundation administers more than $220,000 a year in educational assistance through multiple scholarship programs.

Severe weather effects are felt by many of us during our lifetimes. Weather spotters are essential information sources for all types of weather hazards. A weather spotter’s largest responsibility is to identify and describe severe local storms.

If interested in the weather spotter class, call Kewaunee County Emergency Management at (920) 845-9702 by April 22, 2016 to register. There is no cost for this class.

Manuring spraying presentation featured

The Kewaunee County Board of Health meeting at noon March 14 will feature a presentation by toxicologist Rob Thiboldeaux and Becky Larsen on spray irrigation of manure.

The meeting will be held in the large training room of the Kewaunee County Administration Building at 810 Lincoln St., Kewaunee.

The Department of Natural Resources is currently reviewing the first permit request for spray irrigation of manure in Kewaunee County.  The request was made by Pagel’s Ponderosa Dairy.

Literacy Partners tutorial training planned

Nine percent of Kewaunee County adult residents (only 2 percent of Kewaunee County residents are immigrants) struggle to read a prescription label, read a bedtime story to their children, read a newspaper, or fill out a job application.   Literacy Partners of Kewaunee County is doing its best to stamp out illiteracy in the county.  The results of the nonprofit group have been impressive in its ten years of existence.

Hundreds of residents have improved their reading, writing, and speaking skills as a results of working with volunteer tutors.  Also, nine students have passed the US Citizenship Test and ten have earned their GED with the guidance of a trained tutor.

But Literacy Partners has students all over Kewaunee County who have been waiting two to three years for help.  Sign up for tutor training and help change the life of a student.

An informal orientation session, to find out if tutoring is right for you, will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. April 4 at the Resource Center at the United Methodist Church in Algoma. Tutor training will be held at the same location on April 11, 14, and 25 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Call Bob Garfinkel at 920-845-2516 or 920-676-2061 to pre-register or for more information.
