•Taste of the County: One of the most fun gatherings of the fall comes up this week. It’s a chance to celebrate Kewaunee County’s local flavors and culinary expertise at the annual Taste of the County, 5:30-8 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Kewaunee County Fairgrounds, 625 Third St., Luxemburg.

The event is hosted by the Kewaunee County Economic Development Corp.’s Buy Local and sponsored by 15 businesses and organizations. For $35 you can support our local businesses and sample great food from more than two dozen local restaurants and suppliers.

•HCE speaker: Kewaunee County HCE invites everyone to attend a presentation by former Kewaunee resident Kate Rabas Meier at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, the Kewaunee Highway Department building across from Bruemmer Park.

Kate now resides in Ohio, and her presentation will be “Amish/Mennonite Lifestyle.” For more information, contact Anita Schuller at 388-3171.

•Recognition: Miron Construction Co. Inc. has been awarded six 2016 BUILD Wisconsin Awards as presented by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Wisconsin.

One of them was for the Agropur Inc. Cheese Plant Addition & Wastewater Treatment Plant in Luxemburg, in the “Industrial Projects – New Construction and Renovation” category.

Miron was honored at the AGC BUILD Wisconsin Awards banquet on Thursday at SentryWorld in Stevens Point.

•Plan now: On Wednesday, Nov. 9, Algoma Elementary School’s students and staff will be hosting a Veterans’ Day Celebration to honor who that have so bravely served our country in the military. This celebration will include a dinner for veterans and senior citizens provided by the school.

The meal will be served by the students in the elementary school’s cafeteria starting at 12:45p.m. Reservations can be made by calling the school office at 920-487-7001 by Nov. 1. The dinner will be limited to 100 people.

There will also be a Veterans Day program, open to the public, starting at 1:30 p.m. in the elementary school’s Performing Arts Center. This program has become an annual tradition at Algoma Elementary School and one of the school’s favorite events of the year.

The program includes patriotic presentations by the students, school bands, and choruses. No reservations are needed to attend this event. For more information on the Veterans Day dinner or the program, please call Angela Kinjerski at 920-487-7001, ext. 1212.

•Manufacturing Day: The Kewaunee County Economic Development Corp.(KCEDC), Kewaunee County’s three school districts and the Northeast Wisconsin Manufacturing Alliance (NEWMA) announce the first Kewaunee County Manufacturing Career Day hosted by D&S Machine Service Inc. (412 Fourth St, Luxemburg) and N.E.W. Plastics Corporation (112 Fourth St, Luxemburg) on Oct. 24.

Nearly 300 ninth-grade students from Algoma, Kewaunee and Luxemburg-Casco School Districts will participate in this informative manufacturing career exploration event. Kewaunee County Manufacturing Career Day will offer an enriching student experience in manufacturing career pathways, while emphasizing the important role of the manufacturing industry in our local and national economy.

•We guess it was us: This email arrived the other day …

“As the person who submitted the photo of the so-called ‘albino squirrel,’ I agree 100 percent with those readers who said it was definitely not a squirrel. I say that because I watched it run through tunnels it had made along the river bank.

“When I submitted the photo, I called the creature a ‘cute little guy’ because I wasn’t positively sure what it was. It was your staff person who decided to call it an albino squirrel in the caption, much to my dismay.

“Beverly Randall – P.S. My husband was wondering if it could possibly be Bigfoot.”

•Send news and notes to news editor Warren Bluhm at [email protected], who promises not to make any more guesses about animal photos.
