Spartans girls, Liebeck, Algoma’s Wahlers in state meet
Luxemburg-Casco’s girls team won a Division 2 sectional championship Saturday and advance to the state high school cross country meet for the second consecutive season.
Luxemburg-Casco junior Hunter Liebeck and Algoma senior Jacob Wahlers also qualified for state with strong sectional races.
Luxemburg-Casco topped Freedom by seven points, 57-64, to win the girls meet at the Two Rivers Sectional. It was sweet revenge for the Spartans, who finished runner-up to Freedom by a point at the North Eastern Conference meet the previous week.
Senior Jacie Legois placed third in the 5k race with a time of 19 minutes, 2.3 seconds to lead the Spartans. Faith Vania placed sixth (19:53.9), Kalista Arendt 10th (20:15.2), Lizzy Giddley 18th (20:45.5) and Sarah Iverson 20th (21:07.7) to round out the Spartans’ score.
Luxemburg-Casco and Freedom are the top two Division 2 teams in the Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association state rankings.
Meanwhile, Liebeck placed seventh in the 5k boys race (16:56.4) to earn his first state berth.
The Spartans placed fourth in the team standings.
At the Division 3 Manitowoc Lutheran Sectional, Wahlers became a four-time state qualifier with a runner-up finish.
Wesley Schiek of Valley Christian won the 5k race in 15:55.15, and Wahlers finished in 16:33.98.
Kewaunee senior Hannah Lamack placed 15th in the girls race and missed the state cut by one spot.
The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association state meet is Saturday at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids. The meet starts at noon with the Division 3 boys race.
