Algoma is for the birds

Algoma recognized its designation in 2013 as an official Bird City Wisconsin, as well as International Migratory Bird Day on April 8, with the annual Algoma Bird Celebration at the Algoma Youth Club last Saturday.

Kim Diedrich, chief naturalist of the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary in Green Bay, shows celebration participants a barred owl as she tells them about the raptor’s characteristics and habitat. Diedrich also brought a live red-tailed hawk to the event.

The well-attended celebration offered a program with a live barred owl and red-tailed hawk, as well as programs on bird photography and bird-friendly landscaping with native plants. Children could color bird drawings and craft origami birds, general information on birds and birding was available, and more than 20 vendors were on hand with bird-related products.

Paul Pflughoeft of Algoma sells handcrafted bird houses in different designs in the vendor area.

Nature photographer Bob Kuhn (whose camera work often is seen in the Snapshot Spotlight feature on Page 1 of the Star-News’ print editions) talked about birds in and around Algoma as one of the event’s keynote speakers.
