State 42 to close, from Kewaunee to Manitowoc County line, for four months
KEWAUNEE – State 42 will be closed to through-traffic south of Kewaunee for about four months beginning June 1 for improvements that include resurfacing pavement and replacing culverts.
The $5.1 million project by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation will cover 9.9 miles of the highway from Baumeister Drive on the south side of Kewaunee to the Kewaunee/Manitowoc county line. Work is scheduled to finish around Oct. 1, and access will be maintained to businesses and properties in the work zone, with flagpersons directing traffic in sections not under full closure.
The project will mill and resurface the existing asphalt pavement; replace two deteriorating box culverts that run under the road; repair or replace various culvert pipes in the work zone; install rumble strips on the sides and center lines of the road; improve storm sewers, guard rails and pavement markings; and perform some minor grading and widening of road shoulders.
The DOT said in a press release the repair of minor deformations and cracking in the pavement will reduce roughness and provide a smoother ride for motorists while also extending the life of the existing pavement. The upgrades to guard rails and addition of rumble strips will enhance safety.
The official detour for southbound motorists on 42 is to head west from Kewaunee on State 29 (Ellis Street/Marquette Drive) about 8 miles to County AB, then south on AB to County BB at the county line, then east about 5 miles on BB to rejoin 42. Northbound motorists can use the same route in reverse.
The DOT also reminded the public in its press release that highway workers and motorists are killed and injured in crashes that happen in highway construction zones and that motorists should slow down, be patient and pay attention to their surroundings in all work zones.

Bridge deck sealing in Northeast Wisconsin
The DOT is also starting a project Monday to improve bridge decks on selected state and interstate highways in Kewaunee, Door, Brown, Manitowoc and Sheboygan counties.
The work, with a budget of $201,095, consists of resealing existing concrete bridge decks on the highways to prolong the life of the decks. All work is weather dependent.
Typical sealing operations will be completed in less than one day and the bridges will remain open. Traffic impacts include lane closures, flagging operations or lane shifts. The projects are expected to be finished by the end of June.
