$4.86 million Algoma school referendum approved

Posted

The Algoma School Board has unanimously approved a referendum of up to $4.86 million to fund improvements at the Algoma Elementary School.

The April 5 referendum would fund improvements to the elementary school, including a new library, band and music rooms, additional classroom space and upgrades to its mechanical systems, said Superintendent Nick Cochart.   He said that the funds would also be used to upgrade the back stage of the auditorium at the school.

The board has been studying the need for the new expenditures because of an increase in enrollment and the aging mechanical systems at the elementary school, many of which have not be updated since the 1930s, Cochart said.

Preliminary drawings for the school improvements twere on display for the public at the Oct. 26 budget hearing.
