Algoma won its 19th game of the season Tuesday night in a WIAA Div. 4 regional opener, 73-50 over visiting Southern Door.
The fifth-seeded Wolves (19-6) now travel to four-seed Saint Mary’s Catholic (16-8) in Neenah Friday, while top-seed and unbeaten Kewaunee (24-0) — playing for the first time in eight days — hosts Manawa (9-16), which beat Weyauwega-Fremont (9-15) on the road Tuesday, 57-53.
If both county teams win, they’ll play Saturday for the third time this season, this time with a regional title on the line.
Saint Mary’s is entering the tournament having lost three straight to Cedar Grove-Belgium (73-72), Reedsville (75-66) and The Prairie School (74-65), and hasn’t played a game since Feb. 21. They’ve beaten a number of good teams this season, including Roncalli (19-5), Howards Grove (18-6) and Manitowoc Lutheran (17-7, twice).
The Zephyrs like to run and shoot the three, averaging 75 points a game. Senior Mason Uhlenbrauck averages 16 points, junior Luke Fairweather 11.4 points, 6.4 assists and 3.6 boards and sophomore Dylan Brenn 13.7 points and 4.9 rebounds. Junior Max Vosters adds 9.3 points and 6.2 rebounds, junior Tarver Trinkner 9.6 points and senior Mason Wagner 8.2 points and 4.6 rebounds.
Wolves’ Coach Eric Schneider said it’ll take a road effort similar to the one where they beat Iola-Scandinavia 71-58 in a regional semifinal last March.
“Just bring our best game,” Schneider said. “I thought we peaked at the end of the season last year. Tonight (vs. the Eagles), maybe not our best, but we did enough. We have to be much better Friday night, both on the offensive end and the defensive end, to walk out of there with a win.”
Parker Lischka got only one of nine three-point attempts to fall vs. Southern Door, but still scored 20 points, had five rebounds and five steals to lead the Wolves. Griffin Robinson added 13 points with five rebounds and two steals, hitting 3-of-4 from deep, and Rex Krause came off the bench in the second half to shoot a perfect 4-for-4 with nine points and three boards.
Braeden Leist had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists; Charlie Prokash eight assists, eight points and four rebounds; and Lane Cochart eight points, five boards and two assists.
Last Thursday, Algoma scored a 69-42 Senior Night win over NEW Lutheran. Lischka connected on three straight three-pointers early and four overall in a 20-point first half as the Wolves jumped out to a 41-17 lead. He ended with a game-high 32 points, while Robinson had nine (all threes), Leist eight, Aiden Moen seven, Aiden Zeitler six, Cochart five and Prokash two.
With an opening round bye, Kewaunee hasn’t played since it beat Gibraltar 81-40 at Fish Creek last Thursday in the regular-season finale. High scorers were Avery Jerabek with 18, Diesel Bosdeck 15, Dane Harrell 12, Evan Maccoux and Connor Kilgore each nine and Mason Delebreau eight.
Kewaunee finished unbeaten in the Packerland at 16-0. Algoma was second at 12-4, Peshtigo third at 11-5 and NEW Lutheran, Oconto and Sevastopol all tied for fourth at 7-9.
Luxemburg-Casco (16-9) won a Div. 2 regional opener Tuesday, sneaking by a Green Bay West team with just one win all season, 53-52. They’ll play at Plymouth (17-7) Friday night.
Ethan Ropson’s long three-pointer gave the Spartans a 26-23 lead at halftime. He had a team-high 15 points, while Jacob Coisman added nine.
L-C closed out its regular season last Thursday with a 41-38 win over Wrightstown. Ropson and Coisman each scored 11, Bryce Piesler eight and Tatem Klaubauf seven.
The Spartans finished tied for Oconto Falls for third in the North Eastern Conference (both 10-6) behind unbeaten Freedom (16-0, 23-1) and second-place Little Chute (12-4, 15-9).
