Algoma completes years-long improvement project to Ahnapee Trailhead

Posted

ALGOMA – On Wednesday, Oct. 1, the Friends of the Ahnapee State Trail and the Algoma Area Chamber of Commerce (AACO) held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the improvements on the Algoma Trailhead of the Ahnapee State Trail, a project of almost two and a half years.

The trail is located near the corner of 6th and Perry Streets in Algoma. There were guest speakers including Cheryl Gorsuch of the Ice Age Trail Alliance, Algoma Mayor Steven Lautenbach and Wisconsin State Representative Joel Kitchens.

The improvements are said to bring a refreshed and welcoming gateway to one of Algoma’s most treasured outdoor spaces. One addition is a shelter equipped with a bike repair station for bicyclists who may have encountered a problem on the trail.

After the ribbon cutting, Debbie Kiedrowski with the Friends of the Ahnapee State Trail and AACO Executive Director Bradley Kautenburg presented a plaque honoring all the donors who made the improvements possible.

The Ahnapee State Trail spans 48 mile through Kewaunee County and to Sturgeon Bay. In an area dominated by trains nearly 100 years ago, the trail is now enjoyed by many for hiking, biking and horseback riding.
