Algoma dunks Two Rivers in opener

Leist, Lischka get crowd on feet with combined four jams

In what some believe had to be the most dunks ever in an Algoma varsity boys basketball game, Wolves fans were treated to an aerial assault by 6-foot-2 senior guards Braeden Leist and Parker Lischka.

In a second-half aerial assault, the 6-foot-2 seniors both dunked twice on fast breaks. Several other times they had opportunities, but instead softly dropped the ball through the net, or released it off the backboard.

The rim-rattling jams put an exclamation point on a dominating 78-41 win in the season opener against a rebuilding Two Rivers team Monday night.

“We’ve been talking about bringing the energy to every single possession, whether it’s offense or defense, and I think we certainly did that tonight,” said Algoma coach Eric Schneider.

Leist poured in 29 points, and Lischka 23. Sophomore Griffin Robinson had a dozen, all early triples as the Wolves built a 42-23 lead at the half. Lischka had a trio of threes, and Leist one three and a whole lot of layups as Algoma’s pressure caused multiple turnovers.

“Offensively make sure we’re moving but defensively, just creating chaos,” Schneider said. “We’ve been in that position when it’s hard to play against a defense like that. There were learning curves for our seniors, specifically, and it’s paying off for them now. We have players this year that can play at that level, and I think we executed pretty well tonight.”

Meanwhile, Kewaunee beat Valders Tuesday in its opener, 64-58, while Luxemburg-Casco lost at Pulaski, 76-56.

“Our free throw shooting was not good (4-of-10), which is very unlike us,” said Storm coach Matt Bosdeck. “We also got outrebounded, which again is not something that usually happens. We’re definitely working on correcting that. I thought we moved the ball well, and had four kids in double digits which was good to see.”

Diesel Bosdeck had 16 points, Mason Kovacs 13 and Avery Jerabek and Connor Kilgore each 12. Kewaunee sank six three-pointers, two each by Bosdeck, Jerabek and Kovacs.
