GREEN BAY - A registered sexual offender from Algoma was sentenced Thursday, May 30 to nine years in federal prison for possession of child pornography.

Sean R. Evansen, 36, was prosecuted in the Eastern District of Wisconsin federal court for possessing thousands of digital images and videos of child pornography, many depicting infants and toddlers, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

In 2000, Evansen was convicted in Calumet County Circuit Court for first-degree sexual assault of a child, which is the reason he is a registered offender in Wisconsin.

Chief District Judge William C. Griesbach noted Evansen's prior record and the serious nature of the charge when sentencing Evansen.

Following his release, Evansen will spend six years on supervised release. He will continue to register as a sexual offender.

The case was investigated by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and the FBI. It was brought to court as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growth of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in 2006 by the U.S. Department of Justice, according to the news release.
