Algoma Public Library holds Frosty Reading Challenge

Posted

ALGOMA – The Algoma Public Library is hosting a “Frosty Reading Challenge” from Jan. 2 through Feb. 28 to encourage reading while cooped up in the winter months — with a chance for participants to win prizes. The challenge is open to all readers ages two and up.

Winter can be an isolating time, especially after the holidays as friends and families go their separate ways. Rather than spending more time on social media, as many do in these dark months, the Algoma Public Library is encouraging the community to connect over literature and encourage each other to read.

Reading is especially beneficial for the mind, as according to the National Institute of Health, it improves and maintains cognitive function and reduces stress. This is particularly important during the long, cold months when there may be less opportunities to socialize. If you find yourself with lots of downtime, winter can be the perfect time to build a consistent habit of reading to take you through the new year. Reading fiction can also build social skills and help readers process and prepare for significant events in their lives and those of their loved ones.

Kids ages two through 12 can earn a free ticket voucher to Disney On Ice (Feb. 18-22 in Green Bay) or Monster Jam (March 27-29) in Green Bay by reading five books. If kids read 10 books before the challenge ends, they can earn vouchers to both events.

Teenagers and adults (ages 13 and up) can pick up a Bingo sheet at the library. Earn a line of Bingo for a prize, or earn a blackout to win an even bigger prize.

For more details, please stop by the library, visit their website at www.algomapubliclibrary.org or call 920-487-2295.
