Algoma Public Library to host annual Halloween Party

Posted

ALGOMA – The Algoma Public Library has hosted a family-friendly Halloween party for more than 20 years, and 2025 will be no different. On Thursday, Oct. 30 from 5-6 p.m., community members are invited to a free event celebrating Halloween with kid-friendly activities.

The celebration aims to provide a family-friendly alternative to trick-or-treating (or an additional experience), offering themed games, crafts, photo ops and take-home goodies. The library will also have Halloween and fall-themed board books for kids to take home, thanks to the Algoma Library Friends.

The party will include a spooky walk-through experience created by the Girl Scouts, perfect for younger kids, and scary stories appropriate for elementary schoolers.

Library Director Cathy Kolbeck said this year’s walk-through will be a bit different from years past, with participants encouraged to use their sense of touch.

Attendees are invited to wear their costumes, especially to participate in the photo op with a Halloween-themed backdrop. If the weather permits, there will also be outdoor games like bowling and ring tosses.

“People really enjoy being able to do activities around holidays, we found out, but we know that people really appreciate being able to do something that is free, open to everyone, and also families can participate together,” Kolbeck said. “It brings in people that maybe don’t use the library all the time. So it’s nice to see people come here for the first time and be able to look at all the things that we have here that maybe they forgot about or didn’t even know.”

The library hosts many events beyond the Halloween party, with the goal of entertaining all age groups. Some of their available gatherings include the book club, Unplugged Jam Sessions, Chinese Brush Painting classes and a game night every Thursday in November.

Kolbeck highlighted that by offering free, inclusive and family-friendly programming, the library actively works to break down barriers to participation. This approach aims to ensure everyone, regardless of their economic background or prior library experience, feels welcome and encouraged to explore.

These special events play a crucial role in showcasing the library’s broader mission and diverse services. For first-time visitors, a Halloween party or similar celebration can be an eye-opening introduction to the library’s collections, programs and spaces. They might discover a new favorite book, learn about educational workshops or simply find a welcoming third place in their community. The goal, Kolbeck emphasized, is to transform these initial positive experiences into sustained engagement, fostering a sense of belonging and encouraging regular use of the library’s extensive resources. The library hopes to cultivate lifelong learners and community members who see the library as a vital hub for connection, discovery and growth.
