ALGOMA – During the Oct. 23 Algoma School Board had a meeting, Pat Qualman shared that they are looking into moving the school start date to before Sept. 1.
The tourism industry in Wisconsin is what has kept it from being pushed forward before, especially in Door County.
The participation of transgender athletes in school sports was also discussed.
The state assembly passed Assembly Bill 377, which is related to transgender student athletes.
Another larger issue that was brought up in both the board correspondent report and the Board CESA Report was the Senate Bill 335 that allows superintendents to be hired without proper licenses.
The superintendent and business manager’s report was presented, which discussed the revenue limit worksheet and the 2023-24 budget.
The school board was asked to approve the tax levy of $2,457,437 for the General Operating (Fund 10) budget, the tax levy of $802,500 for the Debt Services (Fund 39) budget, and the tax levy of $705,000 for the Community Service (Fund 80).
All of these tax levies were approved by the board.
Some of the other key takeaways from the 2023-24 budget presentation were that they will be monitoring the declining enrollment, want to see the open enrollment “in” funds increase and the open enrollment “out” funds decrease, and there was an increase in school vouchers by $102,211 from the 2022-23 school year to the 2023-24 school year.
