ALGOMA – Using reallocated funds from a previous scholarship program, Algoma Utilities is engaging with Algoma High School juniors and seniors to help them better understand utility bills.

Through the initiative, students received a form with 18 questions and a sample bill from Algoma Utilities and were asked to relay details from nine separate sections, focusing on various pieces of information that the average customer sees on their bill.

On April 9, Algoma Utilities Clerk Sara Krouse and Energy Services Manager Markie Bscherer also presented to those enrolled in a personal finance and career-planning course.

“Topics of the presentation included types of bills, careers in the utility industry, factors to consider regarding utilities when renting or owning, resources for assistance and efficiency,” an Algoma Utility release stated.

“We want them to use this information in the future,” Krouse added. “If they learn how to read the bills now, they will be better prepared when they start paying their own bills.”

Students receive a $50 gift card — provided free of service fees from the Bank of Luxemburg —for filling out and submitting the questionnaire.

“The utility is looking forward to seeing how students engage in this pilot year,” the release stated.

“It’s meant to be approachable,” Bscherer said. “We even plan to encourage group work. The goal is to help students understand what those bills look like. We’re really excited about this new idea.”
