Algoma water maintenance in next two months may cause discoloration

Posted

ALGOMA - Algoma Utilities will perform water system maintenance in September and October that could cause temporary discoloration of customers' water in areas where the work is being done.

The work involves hydrant flushing, valve turning and routine water main maintenance, which the utility said in a press release are important procedures for a community’s safety.  It is necessary to flush the hydrants in order to test that there is adequate water flow and pressure.  Flushing is also done to remove any sediment from the pipes in order to maintain water clarity and quality in the distribution system.

The maintenance is scheduled to take place between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. throughout the two months. The hydrant flushing could cause water discoloration in areas where the maintenance work is taking place, but the utility said affected customers can run cold water for a few minutes until it runs clear again.  The utility also said the water is safe for cooking and consumption.

However, customers in work areas should not wash white or light-colored fabrics during the hours of maintenance, to avoid possible stained fabrics.

The utility is not notifying all customers of the times this work is being performed in their areas, unless the customer requests notification. For more information, call 920-487-5556.
