Algoma’s American Legion to honor fallen U.S. military personnel

Posted

ALGOMA – As Memorial Day approaches, local veteran organizations prepare to remember and honor the U.S. military personnel who died while serving our country. Algoma’s American Legion Post 236 has planned a day of events to mourn our fallen servicemen and women, honor living veterans and their families and engage the community with a parade and ceremony.

On Memorial Day, May 25, the commemoration will begin at 6:30 a.m. as Legion members join the Honor Guard at seven local cemeteries (St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Ahnapee, St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Algoma, Tweedale Cemetery in Algoma, St. Mary’s Church of Alaska Cemetery in Alaska, Wiesner-Pierce Cemetery in Rankin, St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Rankin and Evergreen Cemetery in Algoma).

After the Honor Guard ceremonies are complete, there will be a free breakfast sponsored by the Knights of Columbus for veterans and their families. The breakfast will begin around 8 a.m. at the American Legion Hall, located at 94 Clark St. in Algoma.

At 10 a.m., a Memorial Day parade will commence, starting at Algoma Elementary School and continuing through downtown Algoma.

The commemorations will end with a Memorial Day Ceremony at Legion Park featuring the Algoma Honor Guard.
