ALGOMA – Zara Joly, daughter of Jacob and Alecia Joly, has been designated as this year’s Poppy Princess for the American Legion Auxiliary, Post 236. She is related to multiple veterans including her grandfather, Wayne Joly, and great-grandfather, the late Don Blahnik. Joly will participate in the Memorial Day parade, held at 10 a.m. through downtown Algoma, followed by a program at Legion Park. Joly will also visit classrooms at Algoma Elementary School, where she attends kindergarten.
Poppy princesses represent the American Legions in the Memorial Day parade and bring awareness about the red poppy as a symbol to honor the fallen and support the living heroes who have worn our nation’s uniform.
Observed internationally, Poppy Day was brought to the U.S. by the American Legion, which successfully petitioned Congress to establish the Friday preceding Memorial Day as National Poppy Day.
On Saturday, May 24, the Auxiliary encourages everyone to wear a red poppy as a tribute to fallen service members and to support those currently and formerly serving.
