Another $1.3 million for road repair projects

KEWAUNEE COUNTY – One week after announcing more than $4 million in transportation aid payments to Kewaunee County cities, villages and towns, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is delivering more cash for local road improvements.

On Wednesday, Gov. Tony Evers, together with WisDOT, said that some $135 million in funding would help complete 302 road improvement projects statewide over the next four years, including more than $1.3 million for three projects in Kewaunee County.

The City of Algoma is slated to get $400,000 toward a Sunset Ave. project expected to cost $1.7 million.

Kewaunee County will get $582,468.23, more than 80% of the anticipated costs for a County S project, along with $361,977.69 for work on County V, about 39% of the expected price tag.

Manitowoc County and the towns of Cato and Liberty were slated to receive nearly $3.3 million for projects on County V, County H and Marken Road, while Door County governments (towns of Gardner, Nasewaupee and Liberty Grove, village of Egg Harbor and Door County) $3.5 million for projects on County B, County W, Poplar Lane, Cloverleaf Road, North Bay Road and Church Street in Egg Harbor.

All the projects were selected based on recommendations from county, municipal and town officials who determine which roads have the greatest need for improvement in their communities. This includes work critical to local downtowns and projects to repair county roads between the state’s rural and urban communities.

The dollars are coming from WisDOT’s Local Roads Improvement Program, which received more than $100 million supplemental funding in the 2025-2027 biennial budget.

Since 2019, Evers said the state has helped fund improvements to more than 9,600 miles of roads and 2,400 bridges.
