Barb Ludlow: Extravaganza was outstanding

I went down to Lakehaven Friday evening for the Halloween Extravaganza and it didn't disappoint at all. I think I speak for all ages because it appeared young and old were having a fun time, checking out all the scary stuff.

It was dark and foggy inside and featured every kind of spooky thing you could imagine. There was a headless bride, sitting in her wedding dress, with a bloody stump where her head should be, and her head sitting in her lap. And don't ask me how they did that.

There were spooks and goblins mingling with the crowd. There was a mummy in a coffin, zombies in crates sticking their hands out through the slats. I almost literally collided with a zombie that temporarily escaped from his crate. Then there was the devil himself, about 12 feet tall, who was also doing a pretty good job of scaring people. Just ask Maggie at Linden Manor about that. She took her grandchildren there on Thursday night.

A guy, sitting in the dark in an electric chair said, “Hi, Barb.”  I had no idea where he was and suddenly the light went on, there was a loud buzzing noise and he started shaking in the chair, like he was being electrocuted.

I also heard there was a headless horseman outside, but I didn't see that. Sorry I missed him. Cartoon characters, like Winnie the Pooh and a couple of others, also entertained the children.

Last year I thought they wouldn't be able to improve on the event, but that was wrong. Bob Orr, his family, the Lakehaven committee and lots and lots of Vollrath employees and others volunteered their time to help make the second annual event a rousing success. It was simply terrific.

Thanks to everyone who helped put it on for area residents in and around out little community. It was much appreciated by all.

And to anyone who didn't go, you missed it.

In a change of subject, the weather this week has been fantastic. Seven of us played golf at Hilly Haven  Monday. It was a gorgeous day with temps in the mid 60s. And the forecast for Wednesday is 70, so this is being written a day early so we can golf again Wednesday.

It's not often we can play in November in Wisconsin.  We'll definitely enjoy the warmth while it's here, because next week it will likely snow.

I was never as cold as last winter, and I'm not looking forward to the coming season. It used to be fun to ski and skate, but this old body balks at that stuff now.  It pretty much wants to be warm and comfortable all the time. I'm hoping for a mild winter. Can it happen? Time will tell.
