Barb Ludlow: It's that time of year again

Next Thursday, Oct. 29, and Friday, Oct. 30, is the Halloween Extravaganza at Lakehaven Hall in Kewaunee. And just in case someone doesn't know where Lakehaven is, it's located downtown on Ellis Street, right next to Lake Michigan.

This is the second annual Halloween event in Kewaunee, and if it's anything like last year, there is something for all ages. Come on down and bring the family. It takes place from 5 to 9 p.m. both days. It promises classic Halloween scenes, the unusual, the creepy and spooky, all the sounds that set Halloween apart, free treats for young and old alike, a “Carved/Decorated Pumpkin Contest” and an “Incredible Edible Contest” that includes decorated cakes, cookies, cupcakes, pies, etc.

Plus, if you're hungry, there will be food and beverages available for purchase.

All in all, it promises fun for all and it's free! People attending are encouraged to wear their costumes.

Anyone entering either of the contests should bring their entries between 4 and 5 p.m. Thursday.  There will be cash prizes and winners will be announced Friday evening at 8.

We went last year and definitely enjoyed it.  From what I've heard, this year promises to be bigger and better. The Lakehaven Committee is going all out for the event. So come to Kewaunee next Thursday and Friday, and bring the family.

On Monday, six of us played golf at the Fox Hills National course. That may be the last time, unless we have “Indian Summer” yet. But who knows if that will happen.

Anyway, it was a nice day Monday, with temperatures in the high 60s. We were the only ones on the course and all six of us played together. But it was very windy and did all that fresh air and wind ever take its toll on us. We were all really tired after 18 holes.

And here are some more “Apolitical Aphorisms.”

John Quinton said, “Politicians are people who, when they see light at the end of the tunnel, go out and buy some MORE tunnel.”

And then there's this one attributed to Oscar Ameringer, “Politics is the gentle art of getting votes from the poor and campaign funds from the rich by promising to protect each from the other.”

Tex Guinan said, “A politician is a fellow who will lay down YOUR life for his country.” (Isn't that the truth.)

Charles de Gaulle is credited with this. “I have come to the conclusion that politics is too serious a matter to be left to the politicians.”

And finally, this one from Doug Larson, “Instead of giving a politician the keys to the city, it might be BETTER to change the locks.”  (that's my favorite.)
