Barb Ludlow: Packers off to a great start

Green Bay is still undefeated so far in the 2015-16 season. Can the streak continue this week against the San Diego Chargers? We'll find out Sunday.

The Pack has won six straight against the Chargers who haven't beat Green Bay since 1984, according to the team's website. At least the game is at Lambeau Field, where the Pack has a pretty good record, to say the least.

The offense sputtered some last Sunday, but the defense was outstanding, except for allowing a couple of long runs by Todd Gurley, the Rams running back. I really think that once Davante Adams returns from his sprained ankle, the offense will improve. And if the defense can continue its impressive performances, the team will be just fine.

The real test coming up will be the undefeated Broncos at Denver, on Nov. 1, the first game following the Packers bye week. By then, some of the many injuries the Packers suffered should be healed. Let's hope so.

The Badgers were also victorious on Saturday, squeaking out a victory over the Cornhuskers from Nebraska. It really got exciting in the fourth quarter.

In a change of subject, for several months already, we've been subjected to many politicians making promises and statements about what they will do if elected president in 2016. It's already getting tiresome, and we have a whole year before electing someone in November next year.

I received an email recently that was titled Apolitical Aphorisms. (I had to look up the definition of aphorisms, and it's basically quotes from others). Here are some of them and who stated it originally.

Jay Leno said, “If God wanted us to vote, he would have given us candidates.”

Henry Cate VII said, “The problem with political jokes, is THEY get elected.” I especially agree with that one!

Another one, attributed to Aesop, “We hang the petty thieves and appoint the great ones to public office.” That is so true ... think about it.

And then there's this one, attributed to the late, great Will Rodgers: “If we got 1/10 of what was promised to us in these State of the Union speeches, there wouldn't be any inducement to go to heaven.”

And then there's this one stated by Nikita Khrushchev (remember him?): "Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build a bridge even where there is no river.”

Clarence Darrow said, “When I was a boy, I was told that ANYBODY could become president. I'm beginning to believe it.”

And then there's this one, attributed to Author Unknown: “Why pay money to have your family tree traced? Go into politics and your opponents will do it for you."
