ALGOMA - Skilled or wannabe nature photographers — if you can capture an image of a bird in Kewaunee or Door counties, you can be part of an international celebration.
Bird City Algoma, which holds a celebration each spring on International Migratory Bird Day, is seeking submissions of local bird photos to use in a slide show that will run during this year's event on April 18.
Photographers of any age or skill level, amateur to professional, are welcome to submit photos of birds in any natural setting — in backyards, at a feeder, in the air, in a tree, along a shoreline, for example — as long as the images were taken in Kewaunee or Door counties by residents of those counties and are of "good quality," Bird City Algoma committee member Sue Hepp said. The organization previously held youth photo shows for the celebration but decided to open entries to all ages to encourage more participants, Hepp said.
Submissions must include the name of the breed of bird in the photo, the date and place it was taken, and the photographer's name. All submissions will be included in the slide show at the celebration, but photographer permission is required for Bird City Algoma to post the photos on its website.
The International Migratory Bird Day celebration takes place April 18 at the Algoma Youth Club, 620 Lake St. It also includes hourlong seminars by local photographer Robert Kuhn and wildlife expert Charlotte Lukes; a showing of live birds from Open Door Bird Sanctuary in Door County; a children's area; and bird-related vendors.
To submit photos for the slide show, email them to shepp@charter.net by April 4. For more information, call Hepp at 920-487-3310 or visit birdcityalgoma.com.
