ALGOMA – Roen Salvage Company of Sturgeon Bay began work to remove the 129-year-old catwalk at Algoma on May 18 in preparation for north pier reconstruction this year. The lighthouse will be taken off, repainted and returned when work is complete, possibly late next year.
A citizen-led committee, Save the Algoma Catwalk, is raising funds to restore the catwalk and get it listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Olson Fabrication will store the catwalk and assess the condition of the steel.
According to the committee, if the catwalk is successfully reconstructed, it will be for purely aesthetic purposes and will no longer be functional as a walkway.
