MADISON - Two cheesemakers with Agropur in Luxemburg and a cheesemaker in Door County received Best in Class awards at the 2020 World Championship Cheese Contest held March 3 to 5 in Madison.
For Agropur, Pat Doell won the smoked provolone category with a score of 99.85 and Roger Krohn won mild provolone with a score of 99.05. Doell also placed second in mozzarella with a score of 99.40 and third in mild provolone with a 98.90, while Krohn scored a 98.30 in smoked provolone for second place behind Doell. Both Doell and Krohn are certified Wisconsin Master Cheesemakers in mozzarella and provolone.
The crema pressato dolce Asiago by Danny McCrary Reed of Door Artisan Cheese Co. in Egg Harbor was named Best in Class in Asiago, fresh with a 99.55 score.
Two other Kewaunee County cheesemakers won awards in the biennial championships. The Renard's Rosewood Dairy Team of Algoma scored a 97.05 with its traditional red wax mild cheddar daisy to place second in traditional waxed cheddar, mild to medium; and the Farmstead Curds by the team at Ponderosa Dairy Products in Kewaunee placed third in natural snack cheese, cheese curds with a 99.65.
The overall World Champion is a Gruyere made by Michael Spycher and Mountain Dairy Fritzenhaus of Gourmino AG in Bern, Switzerland. For more on the contest, visit worldchampioncheese.org.
