Community band, singers join for Nov. 9 veterans’ concert

Posted

The Algoma Community Band and The Lakeshore Singers will present their annual Veterans Day concert at 7 p.m. Nov. 9 in the Algoma Elementary School Performing Arts Center, 514 Fremont St.

Tom Mueller directs the band and David Robertson is the director of The Lakeshore Singers.

The band will be joined by the Singers for a featured song, “America, Remember.” It was written in 2011 by Michael Francis Smith to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11. It contains three sections: the first presents a fanfare and sweeping theme to show the beauty and strength of America; the middle section depicts the chaos and confusion of the tragic events of that day, with band members and singers vocalizing the sound "shh" to subtly portray the falling of the Twin Towers. Then, as the country pulls together in patriotism, the chorus and band members enter at intervals playing and singing until the piece reaches a triumphant conclusion.

After the concert, the public is invited to join the veterans, band members and singers for a reception in honor of the veterans in the school cafeteria. The reception is in honor of our veterans.
