Construction continues at Bruemmer Park Zoo

KEWAUNEE – It’s construction season at Bruemmer Park Zoo in Kewaunee, as the Kewaunee County Promotion & Recreation Department is in the process of making room for potential new exhibits and creating additional green space for picnics and events.

In recent weeks, the old bear pen was demolished and the worn steps that connected the lower and upper portions of the zoo have been removed because of safety concerns.

Another project set to begin soon is a new bobcat exhibit. This summer, the pen’s two residents, Baxter and Bella, will be moved into a much larger home with new fencing, thanks to donations made to The Zoological Society of Kewaunee County.

Also, the two Nigerian dwarf goats, Mr. Nibbles and Brick, will be introduced later this month to some new playmates as the zoo adds two more Nigerian dwarf goats to their playground.

Visitors also will notice a new entrance sign to the zoo in the near future. The Zoological Society is seeking sponsors to help rebuild the sign, which came down in March because of high winds. Those interested in helping to sponsor this project should email info@bruemmerparkzoo.com.

“This is one of our most popular parks, so it’s important to us that we keep it well maintained,” said Dave Myers, Kewaunee County Promotion and Recreation Director.

Meanwhile, the county announced Aug. 26 as the date has been set for the zoo’s Zoobilee 2017. The annual fundraiser for the zoo features activities for kids, arts and crafts, and more.

Also, the Promotion & Recreation Department is now taking seasonal reservations for the open-air shelters at Bruemmer Park Zoo and other county parks. For information and rental rates, call the Promotion & Recreation Department.
