Craig's Piggly Wiggly, one of two supermarkets in Algoma, to close by the end of November

ALGOMA - One of two full-service supermarkets in the city is closing in about a month.

Signs in the doors and windows at Craig's Piggly Wiggly, 2025 Lake St., said the store will close by the end of November. A similar announcement is posted on the store's Facebook page.

The signs and Facebook page also announced a "Going Out of Business" sale that started Monday, with a 10 percent discount on all goods except greeting cards, which are 50 percent off.

Craig Peterman, who has owned the store for 20 of its almost 30 years in business, said he's closing it simply because he turns 65 next July and is retiring. He also said no one wanted to take over the store.

"We looked at trying to find a buyer, but there was really no interest," Peterman said.

Algoma's other supermarket is Denny's Super Valu, 510 Fifth St. Peterman said his business is doing "okay" and he didn't think two large grocery stores in Algoma, population about 3,100, is too much for a city of its size. He said the concern isn't local competition, but competition from 30 miles away — that shoppers in the county are taking their business to the large warehouse and discount supermarkets in Green Bay.

"(More local shoppers) have taken a look at the competing developments in Green Bay: the Costcos, the Walmarts, the Festivals (Festival Foods)," Peterman said.

Piggly Wiggly is a statewide franchise with 104 stores, including one at 931 Marquette Drive in Kewaunee.
