Credit card skimmers found in Kewaunee County

Posted

KEWAUNEE COUNTY - Two credit card skimmers were found at a Kewaunee County gas station Thursday.

The Kewaunee County Sheriff's Department received a call about the two electronic card reading devices, removable devices that copy credit card information during transactions, at about 12:30 p.m. Thieves use the information to fraudulently access credit card accounts.

Sheriff Matt Joski declined to name the gas station at which the devices were found. Other law enforcement agencies were contacted to be on the lookout for the skimmers.

A gas station employee discovered the skimmers while checking the pumps Thursday morning, Joski said.

The sheriff is encouraging people to be vigilant and if they cannot confirm a station has checked its pumps to pay in cash or use a debit or credit card inside the store.

So far no other skimmers have been found.

“Unfortunately, when people perpetuate this type of crime, it is not limited to one or two facilities," Joski said.
