David Edward Meyer
December 14, 1932 – October 27, 2023
Dave was born in Algoma in 1932 to Arnold and Dorothy (Ackerman) Meyer. He attended St. Mary’s Grade School and graduated from Algoma High School. It was during high school he joined the big band era as a mean saxophone player with the Polka Dots, along with many men he would befriend for a lifetime.
Dave was a proud member of the U.S. Navy. He enlisted in January 1952 and served during the Korean War and the Cold War before being honorably discharged in 1960.
He married Donna Wiesner in 1956 and their marriage was blessed with three daughters, Terry, Pam and Jamie.
Dave worked for his father in the Meyer Plumbing & Heating Company from 1956 until 1970 when he bought the business from his father.  He operated the business until 1982 when he sold it and then worked for the Algoma Hardwoods as a maintenance department head.
Dave loved Algoma and was very community oriented. He was a 30 year veteran of the Algoma Fire Department serving as an officer and EMT, and retired as the Fire Chief. He served as a member and president of the utility commission, and member of planning, and street protection committees.
He was a lifetime member of St. Mary Parish and was active in church and school, and was a charter member of the Algoma Community Band.
After retirement Dave enjoyed spending time in ‘his woods’, restoring vintage cars, and woodworking.
Dave is survived by his wife of 67 years, Donna, and three daughters, Terry Meyer, North Carolina; Pam Ray, Algoma; Jamie (Rusty) Fogel, Texas. He is also survived by: four grandchildren Ethan Ray (Paty Gallasova), Molly  Fogel (Caleob Vogel), William (Christina) Fogel, Samantha Fogel (Patrick Zelko) and one great-granddaughter, Mabel Vogel;  brother, George (Karla) Meyer, Madison, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Meyer; daughter-in-law, Kate Walsh; son-in-law, Steve Ray and granddaughters Carrie Ray and Jackie Ray.
A gathering to share stories about Dave will take place at Schinderle Funeral Home, Algoma, on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM with Full Military Rites at 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
