Deadline nears to sign up for Back to School Program

Posted

The 2017-18 school year is right around the corner and the deadline to register for Kewaunee County’s annual Back to School Program is approaching.

The program aims to provide some of the required school supplies for children of families in need. The families who qualify for assistance are those on WIC, Food Share or BadgerCare, as well as those who partake in the free or reduced breakfast or lunch programs or have found themselves in an emergency situation.

The distribution of supplies is scheduled for Aug. 16 at Lakehaven Hall, 96 Ellis St., Kewaunee.

The deadline to turn in registration forms is Aug. 7. Those who meet the registration deadline will be first to receive a postcard notifying them of their assigned times and the first to be able to pick up supplies.

Registration forms received after Aug. 7 will still be accepted, but those families will be assigned a later supply pick-up time. Registrations cannot be accepted by phone. Back to School Program walk-ins may come to Lakehaven Hall from 4 to 5 p.m. Aug. 16 for supplies.

Back to School Program registration forms were sent home with public school children at the end of the 2016-17 school year. But anyone in need of a form, including students attending parochial schools or those who are homeschooled, may pick one up at the Kewaunee County Public Health Department, Algoma Public Library or Harbor Credit Union in Luxemburg.

Financial, supply donations sought

Businesses and community members who would like to help the Back to School Program may do so in several ways, with either a financial or supply donation before Aug. 9.

Financial donations by check may be mailed to: Kewaunee County Public Health Department, Attn: Deanne Schultz, 810 Lincoln St., Kewaunee, WI 54216. Donors should indicate that the check is for the Back to School Program.

School supplies that are needed this year are loose leaf paper; 1-inch 3-ring binders; two-pocket folders; colored pencils; markers and highlighters; and dry-erase markers.

Donation boxes are at many area churches, as well as Shopko Hometown and Nicolet Bank, Luxemburg. Supplies may also be dropped off at the Kewaunee County Health & Human Services Building, 810 Lincoln St., Kewaunee.

“The Kewaunee County Back to School program has made a positive impact in the lives of so many children and the program wouldn’t be possible without the generous support from the community and area businesses,” said Cindy Kinnard, director of Kewaunee County Public Health Department. “We would like to thank the board of Lakehaven Hall for their gracious donation of the space to hold our program again this year.”
