Fat bike trails coming to Kewaunee County

KEWAUNEE - The Kewaunee County Promotions & Recreation Department announced a plan Monday to bring fat bike to its parks.

The department is partnering with Broken Spoke Bike Studio in Green Bay to create trails for bikes with oversized tires, especially popular for winter recreation, at Ryan Park on County C and Riverview ATV Park on County L, both in Kewaunee. Trail marking began this week. Broken Spoke also will sponsor a White Cap fat-tire race at Ryan Park on Feb. 9 as part of the Snow Crown Fat-Bike Series.

“More people are riding these off-road bicycles with oversized tires, especially in winter, and we’re happy to be able to open our trails to the recreational sport,” said Promotion & Recreation Director Dave Myers. “With the help and guidance of the crew at Broken Spoke Bike Studio, the goal is to mark trails at Ryan Park and Riverview ATV Park and then pack down any snow to make it feel as if you’re riding on pavement.”

“We’re introducing Kewaunee County to another experience and that’s the direction the tourism industry is headed,” said county Tourism Coordinator Jennifer Gonzalez. “If we can get these riders to spend time on our trails and then venture into town for a bite to eat and more, possibly an overnight stay, it’s a win for everyone.”

Registrations are now open for the White Cap race, which has four classes from juniors and beginners to advanced. To register online, go to 509cycles.com/snow-crown-series by 11:59 p.m. Feb. 7; sign-ups also will be taken on-site the day of the event.
