Four fire departments responded to a Sunday afternoon fire in an apartment above Second Hand Rose, 423 Fourth St., in downtown Algoma.
Firefighters from Algoma, Kewaunee, Casco and Luxemburg were able to confine the fire damage to the apartment and save the 108-year-old structure.
Building owner Jacob Blazkovec said the tenant in the southeast corner apartment apparently was at church when the blaze broke out - Blazkovec got a call from store owner Yvonne Bothe about the fire.
Algoma Fire Chief Tom Ackerman said the cause of the fire was under investigation. The call came in shortly before 1:30 p.m. and crews were able to knock the fire down within about 45 minutes. Kewaunee's aerial truck joined the Algoma ladder truck in attacking the blaze, and other units and personnel from Kewaunee, Casco and Luxemburg also responded.
Fire damage was limited to the apartment, although some smoke damage spread through the building, Ackerman said. Blazkovec said the structure was built in 1908.
