ALGOMA – Friends of the Walk for the Poor took place on Sept. 27, starting at 9 a.m. from the St. Vincent de Paul store located at 303 Third St. It was a beautiful day for a walk. Warm weather and the company of friends helped to raise money to help the poor in our communities.
Father Timothy Machila, a pastor from St. Mary Parish in Algoma, was the leader of the flock from the store along the Ahnapee Trail, which continued all the way to Timber Trails Campground on County M just outside of Algoma. The journey was about three miles one way.
A person did not have to walk as far as Father but most of them made it that far and walked back to the store for water and refreshments.
There were about thirty participants and three furry friends who joined the walk for their exercise that day. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul extends a proud thanks for all the donations that came from people in the walk, from community members, businesses in the area and surrounding communities. This year, walkers were able to enjoy fresh apples from Hillside Orchards after the walk.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul encourages people to continue to participate in the walk in order to provide assistance to the poor in our community.
