SNAPSHOT IN TIME: Fellows’ dam and mill at Foscoro — now Stony Creek — was deteriorated when this photo was taken over 100 years ago. Years earlier, in April 1875, a break was discovered before the dam could be destroyed. The breach was discovered just as the schooners Mt. Vernon and Two Kitties were chartered to take a cargo of ties from Foscoro to Chicago. Driving along County U today, there is nothing to suggest the noteworthy maritime history along the lake north of Algoma. The photo comes from a private collection.
