Girls Soccer: Spartans aim for improvement

Tryouts were just ending this week for the approximately 30 girls who want to participate in the Luxemburg-Casco High School varsity and junior varsity teams this year.

The varsity team will have 14 returning players this season, said Tracy Bins, girls varsity soccer coach.

With a 2-7-1 conference record and a 5-15-12 record overall last year, the team is hoping to have a "more successful" season this spring, said Bins.

The team's strengths are its work ethic and the senior leadership, she said   There are four returning seniors this year.

"We have a group that worked really hard in the off season, running and lifting weights almost every day after school along with going to open gyms," Bins said.  "I've already seen a lot of improvement from  last year to this year."

Bins joined the program five years ago.  She grew up in New Franken and played soccer both at Green Bay Preble High School and Lakeland College.   She is now a business teacher at the school.

"We have to make statement in the new conference," she said.  "It will be the team's first year in the new North Eastern Conference.

When asked what the team's goals were for this season, all four seniors – Taylor Iverson, Brianna Frontuto, Miranda Massey and Brooke Hanmann – answered in unison that they were aiming for a regional championship this season.

The Spartans open the season at New Holstein on April 5.
