BY JO MAHLUM CONTRIBUTING WRITER KEWAUNEE – A concept called Shop and Drop was an idea implemented by the Voyager District of the Bay-Lakes Scout Council with the hope of contributing to the nationally-hosted “Scouting for Food” event. Through the program, the Scouts BSA of Kewaunee County supplies food for almost 2,000 families in the community. Participating pantries such as Marv’s Bin, Lakeshore Community Food Pantry and Kewaunee County Food Pantry Algoma all receive donations from BSA through this event. “People just don’t realize how many people are affected,” said Voyageur District Unit Commissioner D’Onne Murray. “With the shop and drop, patrons of the grocery stores will see us as they walk into the store and can grab some extra non-perishable items and drop them off on their way out. “It is simple. All we ask is that you grab something from the grocery store as you are shopping for yourself or grab a gift card to the store. On your way to your car, drop it off at the truck.” Scouts and leaders pride themselves on living by the slogan and mission of BSA, “Do a good turn daily.” A good turn is more than simple good manners it is a special act of kindness Murray noted. The efforts of the BSA to help feed families are catching on as Murray shared an act of kindness that contributed to the desire to create the Shop and Drop. “A few years ago, a very nice woman, who was in town visiting her elderly parents approached me and asked what was going on. I explained that we were here in part with Scouting for Food hoping to get more donations for our local pantry from those who come to the stores,” Murray said. “She was intrigued and said she would be back. When she came back, she bought a cart full of food for us. Not gonna lie, I cried. “If there is any way we can boost the donations, Algoma, Kewaunee and Luxemburg Scouts will do it.” The mission of the BSA is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. “By helping feed our hungry neighbors, friends, and families we are doing just that,” Murray stated. This year’s collection took place on April 27.
