Kallie Volk receives Horizon League award at league track championship

Posted

Former Three Lakes High School athlete and now UW-Milwaukee track athlete, Kallie Volk, was awarded the Outstanding Performer Award in field events earlier this month at the Horizon League Track championships.

The award is presented to only two athletes across the entire meet. One goes to an athlete who competes in track events, and the other to a field-event athlete. It is based on the athlete’s overall performance throughout the championship, along with the number of events scored in and total points earned in those events.

“The Horizon League Track and Field Championships were an incredibly special experience for me this year, and being named the Outstanding Field Event Performer was the perfect way to cap it off,” Volk told the News-Review.

Volk, a junior at UWM, scored in five of the 11 events that she competed in throughout the championships. Those events included the heptathlon, high jump, long jump, triple jump, and javelin. Volk placed third, fourth, fourth, fourth, and sixth, respectively.

In the process of getting those results, Volk also achieved personal best marks in both the long jump and triple jump. She reached 19’5.5” in the long jump and 38’10.25” for the triple jump.

The junior said she experienced a mix of emotions when her name was called for the award after the meet, and that competing in nearly a dozen competitions over three days was a roller coaster ride, but said her teammates were a great support system when needed.

“When the meet concluded, and my name was announced as the Outstanding Field Event Performer, I was honestly shocked and incredibly excited. It was such a rewarding moment because it felt like recognition for all of the hard work and dedication I have put into this sport over the years,” she stated. “Competing in 11 total events throughout the championship definitely came with both challenges and rewarding moments, but I am so thankful for my Milwaukee teammates. They create such a positive and supportive environment that makes every competition enjoyable and pushes all of us to succeed.”

Now with her junior season in the rearview mirror, Volk walks into the offseason with plenty of confidence heading into her senior season. She hopes to take a little break from the grind of track and field training before returning this summer.

“As for the rest of my season, I am finished competing. Right now, I’m looking forward to taking some time to rest and recover before beginning summer training. Next season, I hope to return healthy, motivated, and ready to continue chasing my goals.”
