KEWAUNEE – During the Great Northwest Basketball League Wisconsin State Invitational Championship Tournament (WSICT), held March 23-24 in Stevens Point, the Kewaunee eighth grade boys basketball went 6-0 and took home first-place honors.
“You are broken up into divisions identical to your high school division so we were put in Division 4/5. There were 18 teams in our division. We played three pool play games to get seeded and then put in a bracket. We went 3-0 in pool play and earned the No. 1 seed. In the quarterfinals, we played the two-time defending champion Mondovi in the first round and won 55-27,” said Coach Matt Bosdeck.
In semi-final competition, Kewaunee played Rib Lake and won 56-42.
The team went on to face Melrose/Mindoro in the championship round and won 39-31.
“This is a group of boys that has played since third grade together. They have never lost a conference game in the five years of conference play,” Bosdeck added
“It was our first time entering this tournament the boys played very well. Our defense was outstanding and our shooting was very good.”
