A pair of overtime thrillers and a new school scoring record are among the stories we’ve been watching unfold the past two weeks in area boys basketball.
Kewaunee is all alone at the top of the Packerland after beating visiting Peshtigo 61-57 in overtime Dec. 19, while Algoma has a new all-time scoring leader in Parker Lischka after the Wolves needed OT to win at Luxemburg-Casco Dec. 22, 64-63.
“There’s plenty of improve upon,” said Storm coach Matt Bosdeck after he watched his team overcome 33 points from Dominick Baxter. “But give credit to Peshtigo. They executed, and we didn’t play clean. Minus the first three, four minutes, I thought our effort was really good.”
Kewaunee overcame a 12-0 deficit with a balanced team effort. Diesel Bosdeck had 16 points, Connor Kilgore 15 and Avery Jerabek 12. More importantly, others stepped up when needed. Dane Harrell scored five of his seven points in overtime, and Evan Maccoux’s only bucket was a big one in the extra four minutes to help seal the deal.
Meanwhile, Braeden Leist scored 24 points and Lischka 22 in the Wolves’ non-conference win at L-C. Leist made 13 of 14 free throws, including 7 of 8 in OT. Lischka broke the school’s career scoring record on a three-pointer in the first half, and followed it with a two-handed dunk to tie the game at 28. Bryce Piesler had 18 to lead the Spartans, and Ethan Ropson a career-high 16.
A week later, Mason Trimberger scored 22 points, Ropson 13 and Mason Burmeister 12 as L-C beat Green Bay Southwest 68-50 at the Kress Center.
Bosdeck had five three-pointers among his 25 points in Kewaunee’s 84-61 win over Wrightstown Dec. 23. Kilgore added 17 and Jerabek 10.
Algoma beat Denmark Dec. 30, 62-51. Lischka scored 24, Charlie Prokash 14, Braeden Leist 12 and Lane Cochart 10.
“I’m not leaving anything off of film,” said Algoma Coach Eric Schneider. “We want to go out and win games. We have more conference games before Kewaunee, but obviously Jan. 20 is circled on my calendar. I know the boys will be ready for that. We want to go face them and hopefully come out of there with a win.”
