Kewaunee County Board election update: One more contested race, one with no candidates

Posted

KEWAUNEE COUNTY - A contested race for county supervisor will take place in one of three districts where the incumbent is not seeking re-election, but one seat still has no candidates, even after the deadline to run for office was extended.

The original deadline to file nomination papers for all local offices was Jan. 7, but the deadline was extended to Jan. 11 for supervisor in Districts 4, 5 and 7 because the incumbents were late filing notifications of non-candidacy.

District 7 (Town of Casco, Ward 2; Village of Casco, Ward 1) did have a candidate file to run before the Jan. 7 deadline, Lisa Cochart. Now, Cochart has competition after the extended deadline, as Timothy Kinnard filed nomination papers last week. Those two are running to replace Supervisor Charles Schmitt.

The extension also gave Doak Baker time to submit his papers for supervisor in District 4 (Town of Luxemburg, Ward 2, and Town of Red River, Ward 3). Baker is the only candidate who will be on the ballot to replace incumbent and Board Chairman Robert Weidner.

In District 5 (Village of Luxemburg, Wards 4 and 5), though, no one filed papers to succeed Sup. Kent Treml even with the extended deadline. A write-in candidate will fill the seat.

The election will take place on April 7.
