Kewaunee County Clean Sweep Collection event set for September 17

Posted

KEWAUNEE COUNTY – The Kewaunee County Emergency Management Department will host its Clean Sweep Agricultural and Household Hazardous Waste and Unwanted Medication Collection on Thursday, September 17, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Kewaunee County Fairgrounds, 625 Third Street, Luxemburg. The Clean Sweep event provides Kewaunee County residents with an opportunity to safely and properly dispose of agricultural waste, household hazardous materials, unwanted medications and several other items that should not be placed in regular household garbage.

This year’s Clean Sweep event will be held on a weekday as the county evaluates whether a weekday schedule will increase participation and provide more residents with an opportunity to use this important service. Clean Sweep events require significant planning, staffing, equipment and other resources. By evaluating participation and the effectiveness of the event schedule, Kewaunee County can continue to make the best use of available resources while providing residents with a safe and convenient disposal option.

Residents are encouraged to review the list of accepted and unacceptable items at the Kewaunee County Emergency Management webpage.

Residents should enter the fairgrounds using the Third Street entrance. For safety and convenience, residents should place their agricultural and household hazardous waste in the trunk or back of their vehicle. Each household may bring up to 200 pounds of agricultural waste and 50 pounds of household hazardous waste.

Materials exceeding these limits will have a $3.50-per-pound fee billed to the household.

Residents bringing dry medications should remove the medications from their original containers and place them in a plastic bag. Empty medication bottles can then be placed in the household garbage. Sharps containers from Kewaunee County residents are also being collected. This service is intended for individuals disposing of sharps generated through personal household use. It does not include sharps generated by businesses or individuals who provide vaccines, medications or other services for payment. Syringes, needles, EpiPens, blades and similar sharps must be brought to the event in a sharps container or another approved sharps disposal container. A limited number of empty sharps containers will be available for purchase for residents who arrive with sharps stored in containers that are not approved for disposal.

Unacceptable items will not be accepted and will be returned to the resident. If you are unsure whether an item can be accepted, contact Kewaunee County Emergency Management before the event at 920-845-9701.

Kewaunee County appreciates residents’ cooperation and their efforts to safely and properly dispose of hazardous materials, unwanted medications and other items that require special handling.
