Kewaunee County Courthouse

Posted

Kewaunee County was established in the 1850s, with Kewaunee selected as the county seat.
A jail and courthouse facility was constructed at “Courthouse Square” in 1858-59, but burned down.
A second courthouse was later replaced by a third building in 1901-02, at a cost of $35,000 in a Romanesque Revival architectural style.
Today, that building sits on raised grounds and faces east.
It is made of red brick, with a square white portico in front and brick towers surrounding it.
The massive structure looms both beautiful and imposing from the east side.
On the southeast edge of the square, you can also find the jail and sheriff’s quarters, which was built in 1876 and is included in the National Register of Historic Places.
The property is located at 613 Dodge St., Kewaunee.
