Kewaunee County Historical Society announces a capital project to modernize shelving and storage

Posted

KEWAUNEE COUNTY – The Kewaunee County Historical Society has launched a capital project to replace aging shelving and storage systems — an investment designed to protect the community’s most treasured documents, photographs, and artifacts for generations to come.

For years, volunteers have worked tirelessly to preserve the county’s history, often relying on shelving and storage units well past their useful life. Installed more than one hundred years ago, they are no longer able to support irreplaceable research materials, books and photographs.

“Our collection continues to grow, and so does our responsibility to care for it,” said Richard Dorner, president of the Kewaunee County Historical Society. This upgrade is not just about new shelves and storage — it is about ensuring that Kewaunee County’s stories, records and heritage remain protected and accessible.

The improved storage system will help safeguard fragile items such as family records, historic photographs, military documents and rare local publications. Modern shelving will also allow the Society to reorganize its collection, making research easier for genealogists, students and visitors.

This project is funded through a combination of grants, private donations and community support. The Society’s goal is to raise $75,000, to replace perimeter shelving and incorporate locking display cabinetry.

They have raised just over $31,000 towards that goal, and are asking residents, businesses and civic groups to contribute to this effort.

The Society thanks our generous community for believing in the value of preserving and protecting our shared history.
