Kewaunee County holds food, personal hygiene drive in memory of former worker

KEWAUNEE - The Kewaunee County Public Health and Human Services departments have launched their seventh annual Giving for Sara Food & Hygiene Drive, asking the local community to help those in need in the county by donating food and personal hygiene items or money.

The fundraiser to stock the shelves at food pantries across the county to help those in need is held in memory of Sara Malay, who was serving as Aging Services Unit Director in the human services department when she unexpectedly passed away Oct. 7, 2013.

“This is about putting meals on the table and providing essentials for a local family who might be having a tough time,” said Rachel Bauer of the health department. “The smallest donation can sometimes make the largest difference.”

Donations will be taken through Dec. 31 at the Health and Human Services Building, 810 Lincoln St., Kewaunee. The drive seeks nonperishable food items such as canned chicken or tuna (packed in water), canned fruit or fruit cups (packed in water or fruit juice), healthy cereal or granola bars, as well as hygiene items like shampoo, conditioner, diapers, baby wipes, deodorant and soap. Donors are asked to check the “Best Used By” dates on the items; expired items cannot be accepted.

Monetary donations also are being accepted. Those who wish to write out a check should make it out to Kewaunee County and and mail it to the Kewaunee County Health and Human Services Building at above address (zip code 54216) or drop it off at the building. Receipts will be available.
