KEWAUNEE - Time is running out for the public to drop off solid waste at the Kewaunee County Landfill.
The county issued a press release to remind residents that May 25 is the last day solid waste will be accepted at the site on County L while it’s under the operation of the county. The landfill will be capped after it's closed.
The county will lease the building on site and approximately five acres of land to BlueWater Services, Ltd., of Kewaunee, which will operate a waste transfer and recycling station there under the name Riverview Transfer, Inc. BlueWater plans to open the site to the public for disposal needs on May 29.
In a notice on its website, BlueWater said it plans to accept the same types of solid waste that the landfill accepted, except for regulated waste and waste requiring profiling. Among the items it will take are residential waste, commercial waste, roofing, new construction, wood, garbage bags, tires, computers, TV’s, monitors, fluorescent bulbs, appliances, microwave ovens, freon-based appliances, batteries, waste oil, oil filters and clean metal.
The notice also said fees have yet to be determined but at least some will increase, although some may stay the same. The company can set up accounts for those dealing with 50 tons of waste or more a year.
Kewaunee County opened the landfill in 1983. After operation and construction of Phase I and Phase II, the County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution to not pursue seeking a license for Phase III in 2015. This was due to economic projections that included uncertain solid waste volume, regulatory climate and costs.
In 2017, the county began the request for proposal process to cap the landfill with an estimated expense of approximately $1.1 million for engineering and construction.
The phone number at the site will remain the same, 920-388-2223. For more information, call or go to www.bluewaterservices.org.
