Kewaunee County News & Notes: Sept. 24

K-9 save: The Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Department got some four-legged help Sept. 15 in responding to a call about a missing elderly man. It was reported that the man, who had a history of dementia and Parkinsons, suddenly got up and left the residence.

After several attempts to locate him around the house, assistance was requested from Kewaunee Police Department’s K-9 Charlie and his handler, Officer Brian Gale. With the assistance of Charlie, the elderly man was located in a field across from the residence confused and disoriented. He was taken to the hospital to be assessed.

“The Sheriff’s Department would like to extend a thank you to the Kewaunee Police Department’s newest member, Charlie,” the department posted on Facebook. “Since Charlie has joined the force in Kewaunee a little over a month ago, he has proven to be an excellent addition. Charlie has been utilized in several significant drug busts with the Door/Kewaunee County Drug Task Force as well as been of great assistance in tracking several individuals.”

• Iron Man: Kewaunee native Matthew Pahnke, the son of Dale Pahnke and Addie Bernard, finished 42nd out of 2,880 competitors in the Iron Man Wisconsin event, held Sept. 11 in and around Madison.

Pahnke, 44, works for Gatorade as a research scientist. For more information about his big day, check out Barb Ludlow’s column on Page 3B.

•Weather Warm-ups is a charitable collection drive for Kewaunee County Youth. The collection is for students in Kewaunee County who are in need of spring, fall, and winter clothing items. The clothes collected will be distributed at the Kewaunee County Back-To-School program.

There will be four collections throughout the year focusing on different clothing items, and the first is Friday, Sept. 23, at Kewaunee’s varsity football game against Algoma (fall jackets, stocking caps, sweatshirts/hoodies, and thin gloves).

The others are Nov. 11 at the Music Holiday Concert at Kewaunee High School RF Plantico Music Theatre (winter jackets, snow pants, stocking caps, winter gloves/mittens, and boots); Jan. 10 at the Kewaunee vs. Algoma boys basketball game (winter jackets, snow pants, stocking caps, winter gloves/mittens, and boots); and May 1 at the varsity track invitational at Memorial Field (spring jackets and sweatshirts/hoodies).

•The 23rd annual Agricultural Heritage Days celebration is this weekend at the Kewaunee County Fairgrounds in Luxemburg, with Demonstrations, grandstand events, music, petting zoo, treasure hunt, tractor show, antique cars, cookstove food, steam engine wagon rides.
