LUXEMBURG - The sound of sirens, sight of squad cars, fire trucks and emergency response personnel should not necessarily alarm village residents Saturday.
That's when Kewaunee County Emergency Management and community partners are simulating an industrial-type incident along Fourth Street, in the parking lot of Prevea Luxemburg Health Center and at the Luxemburg Community Fire Department.
And, Emergency Management will make posts about the "incident" to its Facebook page Monday as part of a related exercise for additional training.
The incident exercise will require a partial closure of Fourth Street from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the area of the exercise, from about State 54 to the Kewaunee County Fairgrounds. The public will have access to open businesses, and those reporting to work will be able to get to and from their places of employment.
“The purpose of this exercise is to practice procedures and identify areas that need improvement if an incident should occur,” said Tracy Nollenberg, Kewaunee County Emergency Management director. “It’s not often that we expect to get a call for something of this nature, but it’s always good to be prepared.”
Specifics on the incident that will be practiced are confidential. The public is asked to not interfere with the exercise or interrupt authorized personnel; those who do will be asked to leave the premises.
The social media posts on the Kewaunee County Emergency Management Facebook page will be specifically marked for exercise purposes to make it clear they are not for a real emergency.
“We want to make sure that we’re prepared with all facets of communication if such an incident should occur, since social media is where people go to when they want to know what’s happening,” Nollenberg said. “In order to stay in the know, we would encourage the public to like and follow the social media accounts for local police, fire and other emergency response personnel, including the health department.”
