Kewaunee County, what's on your ballot? A look at the races in the April 6 election

Posted

Voters in a number of Kewaunee County communities will have choices to make at the local, regional and state levels when they cast their ballots for Tuesday's general election.

The statewide race on this ballot is for a four-year term as superintendent of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, where Carolyn Stanford Taylor, who was appointed to the position after then-superintendent Tony Evers was elected governor in 2019, declined to seek re-election. It's the first time since Evers was elected to his first term as superintendent in 2009 that the current office holder is not running.

The nonpartisan race pits Deborah Kerr against Jill Underly. The two candidates advanced after easily outpolling five other candidates in the Feb. 16 primary election, with Underly winning 27.3% of the vote and Kerr 26.5%. Underly is the current superintendent of the Pecatonica Area School District and worked for DPI for five years during Evers' time at the helm while Kerr was superintendent of the Brown Deer district for 13 years until leaving last June.

Regionally, local citizens can vote for a new judge on the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, District 3, which covers most of northern Wisconsin, including Kewaunee County.

Current Judge Mark Seidl is retiring, and vying to succeed him for a six-year term in the nonpartisan race are Outagamie County Circuit Court Judge Greg Gill and Wausau attorney Rick Cveykus. Gill has been in his position for nine years, first being appointed by then-Gov. Scott Walker and having been re-elected twice since, while Cveykis is a managing partner at Cveykus Law.

In contested local races in Tuesday's election, the city of Kewaunee has three contested races for four seats on its Common Council, which will have two to four new faces following the election.

Two council members are running to retain their seats. Incumbent Arthur Schiller faces off with former mayor and alderperson John Blaha in District 1 and incumbent Joe Mills is being challenged by chiropractor Robin Nelson in District 3.

Wendy Shelton and Evan Gibbs are competing to represent District 2 after they outpolled Jeremy John Robillard in the primary. The winner will replace Jeff Dworak, who is not seeking re-election.

District 4 also will have a new council member in Richard Taylor, who is running unopposed after incumbent David Kuehl filed noncandidacy papers.

The village of Luxemburg has a contested race for president and five candidates vying for three seats on the Village Board, and all incumbents in those seats are running. Current President Jack Seidl faces off against challenger Larry Hurley, and trustees Germaine Burkart, Brian Barbiaux and Lori Hurley are running against challengers Ronald Tlachac and Daniel Rueckl.

The town of Red River has three contested races. Paul Dalebroux and John Maas are competing for the Supervisor 1 seat currently held by Jeff Dorner, who is running unopposed to replace Mike Sampo as town chairperson; Steven LeGrave and David Schmidt are running to replace Chuck Kinnard, who's not seeking re-election, as Supervisor 2; and Sandy Monfils and Kasie Schmidt seek to replace Eric Corroy as town clerk.

The town of Ahnapee has current Chairperson Gerald Paape and Daniel Haas running for the Supervisor 1 seat now held by Tom Stoller, who is unopposed to replace Pappe as town chair.

In the town of Luxemburg, incumbent chair Linda Jonet faces a challenge from James Reckelberg.

Town of West Kewaunee Chairperson Dan Kassner faces a rematch with Milt Swagel; Kassner defeated Swagel, who since was elected as a supervisor on the County Board, for the seat in the spring 2019 election.

Also, a write-in candidate will become the new chairperson for the Town of Franklin, where longtime chair Richard Wochos decided to not seek re-election and no one filed papers to run for the seat.
