Kewaunee school gun threat: Similar call made at same time in another state

KEWAUNEE - Investigation of a gun threat called in to Kewaunee School District that closed the schools for a day and a half last week revealed a similar call was made on the same day at about the same time to another school in another state, Kewaunee Police Chief James Kleiman Jr., said Tuesday.

Kleiman, whose department is investigating the case, said in an email to the Star-News that officers are continuing to look into the origin of the threatening phone call. Based on the two separate calls to two different school systems, Kleiman said it's possible the Kewaunee school was chosen randomly to receive the call. Kleiman added he couldn't release any more information on the investigation.

The call was received Thursday morning, Jan. 21, at the Kewaunee High School office and mentioned a firearm. The district went into lockdown before sending students home between 12:45 and 1:15 p.m., then remained closed Friday, Jan. 22. Students weren't allowed to walk home, and those not taking a school bus were required to be picked up by parents, specified guardians or emergency contacts who had to show an ID, except for high school students who drove to campus that morning.
